Student Visa and Related Matters

To ensure compliance with immigration regulations and facilitate a smooth study experience, it is essential for all non-local students at the University to possess a valid student visa that maintains their authorized stay throughout their academic programmes. Failure to comply with the conditions of stay may lead to legal consequences. The University is committed to providing guidance and support to help students navigate visa-related matters effectively.

It is imperative that non-local students maintain the validity of their student visas at all times. Violations or breaches of the conditions of stay may result in prosecution by the Immigration Department. If convicted, individuals may face a fine at level 5 (HK$50,000) and imprisonment for up to 2 years.

Under Regulation 2 (3) of the Immigration Regulations, Cap. 115A, a successful applicant entering the HKSAR as a student shall be subject to the following conditions of stay:

a. He/ she shall become a student only at a specified school, university or other educational institution and undertake such course of study as may be approved by the Director of Immigration; and
b. He/ she shall not:

i. take up any employment, whether paid or unpaid; or
ii. establish or join any business.

Starting from 1 November 2024, the Government temporarily exempted full-time non-local undergraduate students from the restrictions on taking up part-time jobs with a view to enhancing their personal exposure and knowledge for working in Hong Kong to incentivise them to stay in Hong Kong for development after graduation. Persons admitted for study may apply for an extension of stay to continue their study in HKSAR within four weeks before their limit of stay expires (Note 1). Students should be in Hong Kong on the date of submission and on the date of collection of the”e-Visa”. For details, please visit the following Immigration Department website.

Please apply for a Letter of Certification (Sample LC3) to support your Extension of Stay application (the current school letter as required by the Immigration Department). For more details, please visit the RES website.

Non-local graduates who have obtained an undergraduate or higher qualification in a full-time and locally-accredited programme in Hong Kong, and wish to enter/ stay in the HKSAR for employment as professionals can apply for IANG. For details, please refer to the Immigration Department website.
