Life at CUHK

A series of short videos named VLOG@CUHK were prepared to facilitate students’ adaptation to CUHK. Students can have a deeper understanding of CUHK and enhance their sense of belongings in an interactive and interesting way. Topics included hostel life, canteens, bus routes, facilities, etc.

1. Experiential Learning

In CUHK, a large variety of co-curricular experiential learning opportunities are available to you to complement the formal curriculum. They help you to broaden your horizons and achieve an all-round development.

Student Development Portfolio (SDP)
The Student Development Portfolio (SDP) enables students to keep track of their participation in experiential learning activities under the I‧CARE framework. Through its e-platform, students can view and enroll for activities organised by university units, as well as record their own student activities in a systematic way. When necessary, students can create a report of experiential learning activities for use.

Student Activities
Student activity participation is a way to plug into the university that allows you to connect with others and to make a positive impact on the university and the community. You may like to join the student associations as a member or as an executive committee member [in Cantonese, ‘上莊’ (pronunciation: Sheung Jong)], or activities organised by student bodies, Office of Student Affairs, your college or faculty. It is a good outside-classroom training of your soft skills like communication, leadership and work-life balance management.

Exchange
If you wish to take courses not available at CUHK, experience a different learning environment, master a new language, immerse into foreign cultures, improve your career prospects and learn to be independent, overseas exchange programme provides you the best solution! Credits earned on approved exchanges may be recognised and can be transferred back to CUHK. You can either join an exchange programme during term time or summer session depending on the plan of your whole university life.

Internship
Likewise, if you would like to gain wider exposure, acquire new skills, carry out research or render service either locally or overseas, the Global Internship Programme enables you to intern at corporations in many countries and regions of the world. You may also participate in other internship programmes organised by your major programme, faculty or affiliated college to enhance your understanding of the real life workplace.

2. Career Planning

Career life starts once a student graduates from university. The Career Planning and Development Centre (CPDC) provides some early advice that you may consider when you are starting your university life.  CPDC also provides a wide variety of recruitment and placements services throughout the year, ranging from recruitment talks, networking events, careers fair to online job portals, e.g. CU Job Link.

Tips for All Non-local Students
Pay special attention to the relevant employment policy at time of your study, including on campus part time job, summer employment and study-related internship within the academic term time, as stated on your ‘No Objection Letter’ (NOL) given by the Immigration Department together with the student visa.
